About Ms. McGhee
Ms. McGhee began teaching at Colina in 1998 and in Conejo Valley Unified School District in 1983; she started her career in education in 1974.  Through the years, she has taught elementary, middle, high school and adult education levels in Special Education.  Her credentials encompass the areas of regular education, resource, learning handicapped and severely handicapped.  In addition, she has a Masters in Special Education from California Lutheran University.

Teaching is a rewarding occupation for her because she enjoy helping her students learn the skills required for them to achieve their goals and live a fun, productive life.  In return, she often ends up learning many lessons from them.  She has a wonderful husband and an adorable cockatoo!  She doesn't have children of her own but she and her husband are very involved in their nephews' and nieces' lives.  Her hobbies are reading, biking, hiking and traveling.

Her Special Day Class is a comprehensive program for students identified with varying developmental needs, academic levels, language abilities, sensory-perceptual and social-emotional challenges.  The needs of students are served by placement in this setting which is the least restrictive environment for them.  A multidisciplinary team works to assist students in successfully meeting their Goals and Objectives stated on their Individualized Education Plan (IEP).  This team consists of teachers, parents, instructional assistants, speech/language specialist, occupational therapist, psychologist, nurse and administrators.  On-going informal assessments and an alternative version of the state's standardized testing (CAPA) are used to monitor each student's strengths and areas of need.  Progress toward goals is assessed and reported.  The main goal of her Special Day Class program is to help each student become a contributing member of society to the best of his/her ability and to experience a meaningful, joyful life.

Special Education
Special Education placement is by decision of an Individual Education Plan (IEP) team;the IEP team includes parent(s)/guardian(s) and staff members. Various programs are possible when a student qualifies for special education: The qualification may be such that he/she is in special education courses anywhere from 0 to 49% of his school day. Within this special ed program, depending on the individual student's needs, placement may be in one or more of these classes: Special Ed Math, Special Ed English, Special Ed Skills Application, and Directed Studies. Otherwise, qualification may be in Special Day Class (SDC), where in at least 50% of the day is in special ed courses. For further information, please refer to the CVUSD Special Ed website.
