What's the Class of the Year (COTY) Program?

COTY banners are proudly displayed in Colina's gym.
.
Class of the Year (COTY)is a year-long program in which homeroom classes compete for the title of COTY Champion. COTY events include dress-up days, evacuation drills, and participation in school events. For each dress-up day, points are awarded according to the percentage of people participating. If a given homeroom's attendance sheet is returned to office manager Mrs. Ross within 7 minutes, the homeroom class earns 4 points. If it is returned within 10 minutes your class earns 2 points. If students are caught running, 0 points will be awarded; safety is first and there is never run during evacuation drills. You can also earn points by having a booth at the Halloween Carnival, decorating a door for our Winter Door Decorating Contest, and creating a Beach Scene the day of the Luau. Classes that participate in these activities will earn 200 points for participating.

For the Door Decorating Contest and the Beach Scene Contest we will award bonus points for 1st through 3rd place in each grade level. The class that accumulates the most points throughout the year will be named COTY Champion.

In addition, every dress-up day one teacher/staff member and one student from each grade will be chosen at random. During fifth or sixth period, Ms. Hogan, Mr. Frank or Mr. Waters, will stop by the classroom of the three students and one teacher/staff member. If the chosen student is wearing the item they will win a prize. If the chosen teacher/staff member is wearing the item they will win a prize. If the teacher/staff member or students are not wearing the item when we come into the classroom they do not win and the prize will be doubled and carried over to the next dress-up day and so on until someone wins. We will also have a best costume/outfit contest on each dress-up day during lunchtime at the outdoor stage. The best costume/outfit contest will be for individual prizes only (spirit points will not be awarded for this contest).

Trained ASB Students will do dress-up day judging for spirit points. The judging will be done as follows. On dress-up days an ASB student will come to your first period classroom around 9:05 (during the first 5 minutes of homeroom) to count spirit points. There should be little interruption if any.

The ASB student will quietly count the number of students in attendance. The ASB student will then count the number participating. The ASB students are to do all of the counting without interference from the teacher or students. If a teacher interferes with the counting or argues with the ASB student his/her class will receive a 0 for that competition. Bottom Line: Let the kids do the counting and don’t hassle them. Just so none of you worry, the students are told to give the benefit of the doubt in all situations when counting for participation.

We train them to count and judge fairly. The student will then look at the teacher. If the teacher is participating then the class receives 5 bonus points. If there is a substitute the substitute will count as the teacher and will need to be participating in order to receive the 5 bonus points. Once the ASB student finishes counting they return their point slip to me and points are awarded based on the percentage of students participating.

For example, if there were 25 students in attendance and 20 are participating that would equal 80%, which would equal 80 points. If the teacher were participating the class would earn 5 bonus points for a total of 85 spirit points. Classes are encouraged to work as a team and help everyone in their class to participate. Only students that are present will be counted. Students that are not in the room when the ASB student comes to count will not be included in the percentage. However, if a teacher purposely sends students out of the room that are not participating to raise his/her percentage his/her class will receive ?0? points (Hard to believe but this actually happened at another school I worked at).

We will continue to have the pancake breakfast. The pancake breakfast will be awarded to the class in each grade level with the most spirit points at the end of the year not at the end of each semester as we have done in the past. We will also have donut parties and pizza parties. Once individual classes earn 900 points they will earn a candy party. Once they earn 1100 points they will earn a donut party. Once they earn 1400 points they will earn a pizza party. All parties will take place at the end of the year. In addition to the pancake breakfast each grade level champion will receive a class plaque. The overall champion will receive a banner that will hang in the gym for eternity.

Each homeroom class will choose a COTY Representative/Student Senate Representative. The class and/or the teacher will pick one representative and one alternate. The representative (or the alternate if the representative is absent) will come to the Cafeteria on selected days during first period to get information about the COTY events and other school issues. They will then report the information back to their homeroom. It is during these COTY/Student Senate meetings that we will discuss what will count as participating for specific dress-up days (ex. How much blue do I need to wear on blue day? What counts as crazy hair? Does a book sock count as a hat? Etc.). We are looking forward to a successful first year for the COTY competition.
