Special Friends, part of Colina campus life for almost 25 years, has received a Thousand Oaks Youth Commission Award for outstanding community service. A past adviser was cited by the Special Education District Advisory Council (SEDAC) as Outstanding Mainstreaming Employee for efforts with this group of students. See Mr. Kane, Ms. Boe or Ms. Fagan-Simpson to apply to be a Special Friend.
Whether assisting with academic or social skills, Special Friends help ensure that Colina special education students are part of campus life a whole. A regular-education grade 8 student may become a Special Friend for his/her elective. (Some grade 7 students are selected as well.) Or, a seventh or eighth grader may serve as a Special Friend during SURE (SURE is the 15-minute period of time allotted after lunch daily.)
