Purpose of Progress Report

The purpose of the Progress Report, issued approximately midway through each trimester, is to inform the student's parent/guardian of areas needing significant improvement. The progress report is issued early enough in the trimester so that there is an opportunity to correct performance in time for the Report Card.

Only Subject Grades of Fail, D or C-, Work Habits marks of U or N, and Citizenship marks of U or N are noted; no mark (a blank space) signifies satisfactory or excellent. In Honors and high-school-credit courses, B- or below is also noted. Each subject-grade that needs improvement is accompanied by one or more computerized comments giving the reason for for the mark.

If a comment indicates that assignments are missing and/or incomplete—the most common reason for a poor mark—you may wish to look into Colina's Zangle ParentConnect.

Purpose of Report Card

The purpose of the Report Card, issued at the conclusion of the trimester, is to inform the parent/guardian of the student's achievement, work habits and citizenship. It is important to recognize your student's accomplishments and to help implement improvement where needed.

On the Report Card the Subject Grade for each class is noted: A, B, C, D or Fail, sometimes accompanied by + or -. Work Habits and Citizenship are reported as well: E, S, N or U for each area. Commendatory comments sometimes accompany areas in which the student is doing well or improving. Each subject-grade that needs significant improvement is accompanied by one or more computerized comments giving the reason for for the mark.

If a comment indicates that assignments are missing and/or incomplete—the most common reason for a poor mark—you may wish to look into Colina's Zangle ParentConnect.

Eligibility for Promotion from Middle to High School
Promotion Ceremony
Letter sent home regarding Promotion Activities and Ceremony in PDF format (stay tuned)
To go through the Promotion Ceremony—to be promoted on stage—each grade 8 student must meet all the following requirements:

1. pass English and math each trimester;

2. pass 5 of 6 classes each trimester;

3. maintain 75 points by the end of each trimester and from June 1 to promotion;

4. Have at least 5 acceptable citizenship grades (E, S, or N); and

5. Owe no debts (library fines, etc.).

In 2007-08, each grade 7 students must:

1. pass English and math each trimester;

2. pass 5 of 6 classes trimester 3
* of only 2007-08

Any grade 7 student who does not meet he above two requirements may not "not ready for 8th grade." The student will be required to satisfy additonal interventions in the fall to be successful for grade 8. (See intervention options listed below; Colina will determine the appropriate options to implement.)

*In 2008-09: The entire grade 7 year will be added, with requirement of passing 10 of 12 credits to enroll in grade 8; must pass English and math; must pass 5 of 6 classes; must satisfy school requirements for citizenship/points; trimester 3 of grade 6 will determine enrollment in grade 7.

*In 2009-10: All students in grades 6, 7 and 8 will be required to pass 5 of 6 classes each trimester to avoid interventions and sanctions.

These options will be considered by Colina administration for a contract called
"How I Plan to Earn Promotion":

1. Retention
2. Summer school
3. 7-period day for unsuccesful grade 7 students going into grade 8, including help in math and/or English skills (Cornell notes, etc.)
4. Club enrollment / Power Hour

All trimesters grades beginning in 2009-10 (or perhaps beginning in 2008-09 or 2007-08--all tentative) will be cumulative so that students understand that work from the beginning counts all the way through. Colina will be able to develop its own incentive programs as will as contract options, including perhaps some of the above.
