All Colina students are invited for a week of residential Outdoor Education/School. Outdoor School takes place at Camp Bloomfield, located in the mountains on Mulholland Highway, about two miles inland from Leo Carrillo State Beach. The camp provides comfortable and modern facilities including heated cabins with indoor flush toilets and showers, fully equipped kitchen, and large central hall. This project has been carefully planned by teachers and administrators, and has received the approval of the Board of Education.

Outdoor School will be one of the highlights of a student's educational experience. Students will participate in activities such as hiking, nature lore and conservation. The classes provide the student with hands-on science instruction in the out of doors.

As the date nears for the Outdoor Ed week, the student will receive, to take home, a packet with medical and other forms to be completed, signed and returned to the regular Colina homeroom teacher. A check, payable to Colina Middle School, for $190 ($90, tentative, for a second child in the same family) will need to be included.

On Monday of the start of Outdoor Ed week, students are to arrive to Colina by, at latest, approximately 8:45 a.m.; when the regular bell rings they are to report to homeroom. Busses will transport the students to Camp Bloomfield, a trip of about an hour.

SUPERVISION: Students will be under the supervision of Colina's grade 6 teachers during their week of attendance. the staff each week will consist of regular classroom teachers, Outdoor School instructors, and counselors. The instructors include experienced teachers and college students with experience in environmental education. the counselors, most of whom are high school seniors, have been carefully selected, based on their qualifications and backgrounds. the children will be supervised 24 hours each day by capable staff members who are experienced in working with children and are knowledgeable in first aid.

TELEPHONE NUMBER: The regular number of the Outdoor School Office is (805) 497-9511, Ext. 297. Please leave a message. Mr. Tom Hoegeman is director of Outdoor Education.

What do students learn in Outdoor School?
Students who come to Outdoor School learn about the environment they live in by taking "trail classes" led by naturalists who are skilled in the subject they teach. There are no classrooms or desks, students learn about the environment by going out and seeing it firsthand. Naturalists teach their classes by firsthand discovery, discussion, activities, experiments, games, and songs.
One of the highlights of the week is the Beach Hike. Students hike down the Arroyo Sequit Canyon to Leo Carrillo State Beach. While at the beach, students explore the sea caves, tide pools and watch for dolphins and migrating gray whales
Students have a chance to relax and have fun during our Evening Programs.† Students watch and perform skits at the Campfire, enjoy themselves at the Square Dance, and learn about nocturnal animals and astronomy on the Night Hike.
Trail Classes include :

Astronomy, Botany, Ecology, Geology, Hydrology, Oceanography, Zoology
