Colina is continuing our commitment to community service this year by hosting a "Pay It Forward" community service project. Colina will be having its Fifth Locks of Love Day. Locks of Love is a not-for-profit organization that provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children under the age of 18 with medical hair loss. The children suffer from many conditions that result in hair loss such as alopecia, severe burns, and radiation treatment.
Students, parents and staff volunteers will have their hair cut between 8:00 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. in the auditiorium to donate to Locks of Love. We will have professional hair stylists do the cutting. For more information about Locks of Love, you may check out their website at www.locksoflove.org or call (888) 896-1588. Locks of Love is one of the many organizations that collect donated hair; if your child would like to donate their hair to a different organization they may do so. Students that participate in this community service project must have advance parent permission. We are asking local hair stylists to donate their time to do the cutting. The donated hair must be at least 10 inches in length (tip to tip). The hair must be bundled in a ponytail or braid, and must be clean and dry. Locks of Love needs hair from men and women, young and old, all colors and all races. Hair may be colored or permed. You may pull curly hair straight to measure the minimum 10 inches. The majority of their hair donations come from children who wish to help other children. Each participant will have the luxury of receiving a free haircut from the talented and experienced local hair stylists. Our goal this year is to have at least 20 Colina students and staff members volunteer to participate in this wonderful project. Over the past four Locks of Love events, Colina students and staff have donated more than 1300 inches of hair, including about 85 pony tails, to Locks of Love. Let's see if we can raise our cumulative total to 1600 inches or more this year. If your child would like to participate by donating their hair, please download and sign the Parent Permission Form and have her/him return it to Colina’s Counseling Center. A quote by Gloria Jones is apt to describe Locks of Love: "There is nothing more rewarding for a student than to know he or she is helping other people." Sincerely, Sam Kane, Colina Counselor Jessica Greenberg, Colina Counseling Intern |
