Here are the prerequisites for and descriptions of grade 8 Honors courses:
Course Prerequisites (all must be met) Description
Math 1H
(UC/CSU have not approved this course for extra honors credit)
• Scored "Advanced" on the California Standards Test in Math; and
• "A" or "B" grade in Math 7H for all trimesters/semesters
Math 1H formally develops the aritmetic and algebraic skills and concepts necessary to solve the three basic problem sets:
1. Linear equations/inequalities in one variable
2. Systems of equations/inequalities in two variables
3. Second-degree equations in one variable
The function notations and concepts necessary for more advanced mathematics courses are included in the course outline. The course does not receive high school credit.
Focus on Physical Science 8H • "A" grade in Focus on Life Science7 for all trimesters
• Engrollment in Algebra either prior to or concurrently
• Scored "Advanced on both the California Standards Tests
This course provides an advanced and enriched curriculum for selected students with an emphasis on physical science and chemistry. it is designed for experimentation, laboratory work, and math application. Students achieving a grade of "A" or "B" in this course advance to the high school honors science program. This course does not receive high school credit.
English 8H • "A" or "B" grade in English 7H all trimesters; or "A" grade in English 7CP all trimesters
• Scored "Advanced" on California Standards Test in English-Language Arts
This course is designed to focus on reading, writing, listening and speaking, with emphasis on the general English curriculum and enrichment in the areas of writing and composition experiences and expanded study of literature
Social Science 8H • "B" or above in Social Science 7H or "A" in Social Science 7CP

• Scored "Advanced" on 7th grade California Standards Test in English-Language Arts is strongly recommended

This course is structured to meet the needs of selected students and provide a qualitatively different curriculum within the basic social science framework. The objectives of the course will be accomplished through enhanced reading and discussions and audio-visual aids. Emphasis will be on originality, crativity and research.
