What is Homework Monitor? In a nutshell:
On any day that a student has not turned in a complete homework assignment*,
the teacher informs the counseling office.
The counseling office lets the parent know by an e-mailed message.

Choose one of two ways to enroll your student in the Homework Monitor Program:
• Most, but not all, academic teachers participate in the Homework Monitor program. Participating teachers vary as to when they inform parents of missing/incomplete assignments. For example, some teachers will send the e-mail home the same day as the assignment was collected; some will e-mail the following day; others will e-mail after the work has been graded; still others, if they collect work in "packets," will e-mail after a packet has been collected/graded.

1. The teacher will:
• Let the counseling office know of missing or incomplete work.
In class on a daily basis, the teacher will let the counseling office know if the student has a homework "infraction".
An "infraction" occurs when the student:
•Does not have yesterday’s assignment ready to turn in (or to add to the packet) today at the beginning of the period; or
•Has not completed yesterday’s assignment; or
•Has turned in work that in the teacher’s judgment shows obvious lack of effort.
At the discretion of the teacher, an infraction may include work assigned to be done entirely in class. Also, teachers vary regarding which infractions they will report; please click here to see your student's teachers' participation.

2. The counseling office will:
• Send an E-mail to the parent to indicate that the student has a homework infraction.
The E-mail's purpose is so that you may discuss the missing or incomplete work with your student; please do not ask the counseling center to forward any message to the teacher; with up to a third of the school on the Homework Monitor system in a given school year, it is not feasible for us to serve as a conduit to teachers about individual assignments; please see below for the recommended method of staying informed about the assignments. |
3. The parent will:
• Reply to our E-mail (by clicking the Reply button of the browser & typing "Message received").
Colina reserves right to terminate students from program if parent does not reply to our e-mail or make confirming call.
Regretfully, if there are three "no e-mail replies" by the parent, the student may be terminated from the Homework Monitor Program. In order to run this program successfully, we need to be sure you are receiving our intended messages.
• Hold the student responsible for doing the missing or incomplete work.
The parent can find out what the work is by checking the student's Assignment Notebook, viewing the "My Homework Today" feature on Colina's website (www.colinamiddle.org).
Homework Monitor is not intended to generate "back and forth" e-mails between parent and teacher about what is missing/incomplete; the dialogue should be between parent and student; if there are still questions, the student should approach the teacher the next school day to clarify what's missing/incomplete.
Please note that teachers vary as to how much, if any, credit is given for late work, and as to how late they will accept makeup work; your student should have been informed by each teacher at the start of the year about their makeup-work policy; if you are not certain, please check with the teacher via his/her web page, or by note, phone or email.
