What is Scoliosis? It is a sideways curvature of the spine. That is, the spine bends from side to side in addition to the normal in and out curve. How does a screening help? Early detection is very important. If this condition is found early, and appropriately treated, progressive spinal deformity can be prevented. Even a slight curve can be detected in this simple screening process. In the Winter/Spring of each year we screen all 7th grade girls and 8th grade boys for scoliosis. The screening is done during the P.E. classes and will take two days, one for 7th grade girls and one for 8th grade boys. We will also have a day for re-screening for any students that were absent, and for any that failed the first test. A parent information letter will be sent home with your student. If you do not wish your student to participate in this program, please sign and return the letter to the school Health Office. If you want your student to be screened, you do not need to return the letter; he/she will be screened automatically. The screening dates are: 7th grade girls on Feb. 12, 2008 and 8th grade boys on Feb. 13, 2008. Re-screening date: Feb. 28, 2008 Annette Kessler, Health Clerk |
