National Geographic Bee
About the Geography Bee
Open to all Colina students—grades 6, 7, and 8. The Geography Bee is oral; on some questions there is a multiple-choice of two responses; other questions will require the student to produce the answer without choices given. Exact contest rules will be given at the start of the Bee.

To our way of thinking, each contestant is a winner for turning on to learning about the world ...so that he or she can be a better global citizen.

Colina's top scorers receive school recognition, including a certificate. The first place winner automatically earns an invitation to Awards Night. The top scorers are acknowledged on Colina's website and the public address system. The school champion is awarded a $75 Best Buy Gift Card; runner-up gets $50 Best Buy; third place, $25 Best Buy.

On the same day as, or within a few days of, his/her victory in the Colina Geo Bee, the first place winner will be given (at Colina) a written, multiple-choice Qualifying Test consisting of 70 multiple-choice questions to be answered in 60 minutes; the student's scanform will be sent to the State Bee headquarters (it will be postmarked by a certain deadline); if the student's score on this Qualifying Test is one of approximately 100 top scorers, he/she will be invited to enter the State Geographic Bee
. State bee prizes are: 1st place, $100, a prize, and a trip to Washington, D.C.; 2nd, $75 and a prize; 3rd, $50 and a prize; all state-level participants, T-shirts and certificates. (Disclaimer: Prizes subject to change without notification)

The winner of the State Bee goes on to the National Geographic Bee
. The national champion will receive a $25,000 college scholarship; second- and third-place winners will receive $15,000 and $10,000 scholarships, respectively. The top 10 finalists will be awarded $500 each. (Disclaimer: Prizes subject to change without notification)

Participants' parents are invited to attend as an audience! The National Geographic Bee is cosponsored by the National Geographic Society.

National Geographic Bee Information
(unofficial information, subject to change without notification; rules for the Colina school Geography Bee to be given at Bee)
The National Geographic Bee is a nationwide contest for schools in the United States. The
Bee is conducted in English and is open to students in grades four through eight who are not over the age of 15. The Bee is a program of the National Geographic Society. With a first-place prize of a $25,000 college scholarship-plus other prizes-the Bee is designed to encourage the teaching and study of geography. Students from all 50 states, the U.S. territories, and the Department of Defense Dependents Schools are participating in the 2005 National Geographic Bee. There are three levels of competition: school, state, and national. At the school-level Bee there is a minimum requirement of six students from any of the eligible grades. To compete for advancement from the school to the state level, the winning student in each school must take the written, multiple-choice Qualifying Test. As many as a hundred of the highest-scoring students in a state or territory advance to the state level. The first-place winner from the state Bee advances to the national level.

The National Geographic Society provides the questions and answers for the Bee. Questions at all levels of the Bee address the subject of geography in its broadest sense. Some will require knowledge of place-names-a skill basic to geography-and of the location of cultural and physical features. The distribution and patterns of languages, religions, economic activities, populations, and political systems will also be covered. Students may be asked about cultural and physical regions or about physical phenomena, such as tectonic activity, landfonris, climate, bodies of water, soils, and flora and fauna. The changes in places and regions through time, including how people have modified the environment, may be addressed. Tools geographers use, such as maps, instruments, graphs, and statistics, may be the subject of other questions.

Bee questions, which follow guidelines established by the National Geography Standards, are designed to test a student's knowledge of geography. The format calls for brief answers, usually only a word or a phrase. Questions may require interpretation of maps, graphs, and photographs.

The National Geographic Society provides schools with a packet which includes suggested rules for school Bees. Each school, however, is responsible for conducting its own Bee. Rules for the Colina Geography Bee will be given at the start of the Bee.
