School Choice Information
(Excerpted/adapted from the School Choice Information letter, dated Feb. 1, 2007 (this is the 2007-08 school year letter--stay tuned for 2008-09 letter), mailed to all families in the District.)
The Conejo Valley Unified School District is pleased to offer an for parent involvement through school choice.
The District still supports the "neighborhood" school concept, and your child is assured the right to continue in the same school next year that he/she is attending this year, or would normally attend if moving up to middle school or high school next year. However. there are several "choice" options that will be available in the 2008/2009 school year (beginning August 27, 2008). All of these options are based on the availability of space as defined by Board Policy 433.1. If there are more applicants than space available, participants will he selected by lottery.
One such option is the limited-enrollment Middle School Program for Sixth Graders, which will be ofered at all middle schools. Students currently attending K-5 elementary schools will automatically be transferred to their neighborhood middle school for sixth grade based on their address of reidence. Students currently attending K-5 elementary schools who wish to attend a school other than their neighborhood middle school, and students currently attending K-6 elementary schools who wish to attend the middle school 6th grade program, must submit a School Choice Application.
Priority For 6th Grade Middle School Program Enrollment:
1. Neighborhood students from a K-5 elementary school.
2. Neighborhood students from a K-6 elementary school, selected by lottery.
3. Non-neighborhood students residing in the District, selected by lottery.
4. Students residing outside of the District.
(Sibling priority is not available for the 6th Grade Middle School Program)
For more information about the Middle School Programs for Sixth Graders, you should attend one of the public information meetings, scheduled on different dates Colina, Los Cerritos, Redwood, Sequooia and Sycamore Canyon schools. At Colina the public information meeting will be on Monday, March 10, 2008, at 7:00 p.m., in Colina's auditorium, 1500 Hillcrest Drive, Thousand Oaks, CA 91362.
Questions and Answers
1. What if I want my child to attend the same school next year that he/she is attending this year?
YOU DO NOT NEED TO DO ANYTHING. If your child is not changing levels (e.g., elementary to middle or
middle to high school) your child will automatically be enrolled in the same school he/she attended this year.
2. What do I need to do if I want my child to transfer to his/her neighborhood school?
Complete a School Choice Application (check box number 1) and return the application by March 31, 2008 (subject to change).
3. How do I apply for a school choice school or program?
Complete a School Choice Application (available at all school sites, the District Office, and the District website: www.conejo.k12.ca.us beginning February 1, 2008) and return it to Janet Cosaro, Deputy Superintendent,
1400 East Janss Road, Thousand Oaks, CA 91362 (date/person subject to change). Applications must be received at this address on or before March 31, 2008 (subject to change). The District is not responsible for forms not received by the deadline at the address listed above.
4. What is the deadline to apply?
March 31, 2008 (subject to change). Applications received after March 31, 2008 (subject to change) will be placed at the bottom of the wait list.
5. When will I know if my application was selected?
If you apply by March 31, 2008 (subject to change), you will be notified by mail no later than May 31, 2008 (subject to change).
6. What happens if my application is not selected?
Your child will remain in the school he/she is currently attending or assigned to attend next year. If you request,
his/her name will be placed on a waiting list for the coming school year and you will be notified when space becomes
available. Only students who are enrolled in a CVUSD school will be kept on a waiting list after the 6th day of
school. If you do not respond within 48 hours of being notified of a vacancy, your space will be given to the next
applicant. All waiting lists expire at the end of the 2008/2009 school year.
7. What if I change my mind after being selected?
Your child will be reassigned to his/her neighborhood school. If space is no longer available at the neighborhood
school, you will remain assigned to your “school choice” school until space at your neighborhood school is available.
Students will not be allowed to change schools more than one time per year.
8. What if my child is changing levels next year (elementary to middle school or middle school to high school)?
YOU DO NOT NEED TO DO ANYTHING if you want your child to attend the middle or high school he/she would
normally attend. Your child will automatically be assigned to the middle or high school that he/she would normally
attend on the basis of your child’s residence.
If you want your child to attend a middle or high school that he/she would not normally attend on the basis of his/her
residence, you need to submit a School Choice Application.
9. If I have more than one child, can they attend the same school?
Yes, if space is available for all of them. If there is not room at your selected school for all of your children, you will
be given two days to decide whether to split schools or remain at your neighborhood school.
10. Can I participate in school choice if my child is in a special program?
Programs for Gifted and Talented Education students, Resource Specialist students, most Special Education/Day Class
students, and services such as speech and language therapy are available at all schools. Some Special
Education/Special Day Class services may only be available at selected sites. Special Day Class students change
schools through the IEP process. Contact your child’s principal or Special Education Coordinator for assistance.
11. What if my child is attending a school this year on an Out-of-District Attendance Permit?
All out-of-district students must renew their Out-of-District Permits annually. Continuing out-of-district students may
be allowed to return to the same school they attended the prior year. New out-of-district applicants and out-of-district
applicants changing levels have last priority for school choice options and programs. There will be space for some out-
of-district applicants. However, space may not be available at the specific school requested.
12. Will transportation be available to my school of choice?
Generally not. New parent-pay routes will not be added unless there is sufficient demand to make a new route cost
effective. For further information on parent-pay routes, contact Janet Boland, Transportation Specialist, at 497-9511,
extension 207.
13. Will changing high schools affect athletic eligibility?
Students changing high schools may be ineligible for varsity level sports for one year. Contact your home high school
or the CIF office at 562-493-9500 for additional information.
We look forward to helping parents have a greater choice in their child’s education. If you still have questions, please
contact the principal of your child’s current school, contact the Instructional Services Division staff at 805-497-9511,
extension 239, or email dgonzales@conejo.k12.ca.us (this e-mail address subject to change for 2008-09).

More and Answers About Enrollment at Colina: If a Student Lives Outside of CVUSD...
Applicant must obtain an Interdistrict Transfer Permit from their school district office and submit it to that office every year. Their school district must first determine if they will release the student. If they are willing to release the student, the paperwork is forwarded to our Pupil Services Office (Tel: 805-497-9511, x296). If CVUSD can accommodate the student, then the student is accepted. The transfer is not in effect until we accept the student.
