American Mathematics Contest (AMC), offspring of the American High School Examination, consists of 25 written multiple-choice problems (five choices for each question) to be solved in 40 minutes. The problems are ranked in approximate ascending order of difficulty. Completed examinations are sent to the American Mathematics Competitions, Lincoln, Nebraska, for scoring. No penalty for guessing. The following aids are permitted: calculator (including graphing calculator), scratch paper, graph paper, ruler, eraser. Students opting to use any of the aids must bring their own--Colina will not supply any. No problems on the test require the use of a calculator. Specific directions for the contest will be given just prior to the event.

Colina's top scorer receives a
$75 Best Buy Gift Card; the runner-up and 3rd highest scorer win $50 and $25 Best Buy Cards, respectively. The first place winner automatically earns an invitation to Awards Night. The top three scorers are recognized on Colina's website and the P.A. system. If the number correct for any Colina contestant is high enough when compared to scores nationwide, the student's name will be included in a National Honor Roll. After the contest, a list of all participants will be listed on this page of the website.

National sponsors of the American Math Contest: National Council of Teachers of Mathematics; Mathematical Association of America; Society of Actuaries; Mu Alpha Theta; Casualty Actuarial Society; American Statistical Association; American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges; American Mathematical Society; American Society of Pension Actuaries

Why participate in the American Math Contest?

Dear Student and Parents:

The UC System, in a recent issue of its California Notes, writes about admissions criteria to each campus. For UCLA, the newsletter states that certain students, will be admitted not merely by meeting GPA and college entrance exam standards: ?In addition to the academic criteria...the campus reviews the student’s essay for the quality of writing and substance, honors and/or awards received, and extracurricular activities. More and more, universities and colleges are considering those other factors in their decisions about which students to admit. It is important, therefore, if you aspire for a good chance at being considered by many higher-learning institutions, to begin (or continue with), various accomplishments outside the required academic realm. This is not to imply that middle school extracurricular activities and awards will "count" toward such admissions; the point is that one should start a pattern and habit of juggling a solid academic load with those supplementary activities--of learning how to balance one’s schedule in order to be scholastically well-founded and otherwise well-rounded.

An opportunity for such supplementary work is the option
al annual American Mathematics Contest (AMC8), to which, you, Colina’s Math 1H students, are invited to participate. Students who want to participate but have Period A classes will be excused from those classes on that day. The AMC is achieving the prestige of its "parent," the American Math Contest 10/12, which has existed for decades. We at Colina recommend that you participate. Student’s will have 40 minutes to solve 25 multiple-choice problems. Besides school results, a National Summary of Results and Awards is published with names of top scores and a listing of national award winners. For many of the years, Colina has had students who earned a place in the National Summary of Awards and were listed on the National Honor Roll. Each state also has an honor roll.

Participation in the AMC is voluntary. Any practice is the responsibility of each student who chooses to participate; sample problems and the actual problems and solutions from previous years tests will be issued to students who sign up for the competition. There is no penalty whatsoever for not doing well or choosing not to enter the competition.

Transportation to the examination is the responsibility of the student and parent. Each student must be punctual, arriving no later than 7:45 a.m..

In advance, we thank you our parents, for your support of Colina’s Math Honors Program; and we thank you our students, for your participation in the program.

Sincerely,

Sam Kane, Counselor, Colina AMC Coordinator
Teresa Coffman, Chairperson, Mathematics Department
