Who We Are...
Co-sponsored by Ms. Beck, Ms. Krug, Ms. Lipsky and Ms. Fagan-Simpson, Adelante, Mujeres is a scholarship support group for grade 8 Latinas and their associates. The main function is to raise money for a college scholarship fund, which will be available for application to the members as high school seniors. The young ladies, who meet weekly, have conducted fund raisers such as a fiesta and holiday cards. They have contact with the UCLA group "Latinas Guiding Latinas," and have taken a field trip to UCLA to tour the facilities. The group celebrates Cinco de Mayo. Members encourage and support each other toward good citizenship and good grades, and peer tutor each other as needed.

Crop Walk, March 9, 2008, 1 p.m., starts at CLU

Five non-profit organizations reaped the rewards of the annual Conejo CROP Walk that took place last March.  CROP (Communities Responding to Overcome Poverty) Walks are sponsored by the Church World Service/CROP, the interfaith relief development and refugee assistance arm of the National Council of Churches.  There are about 2000 CROP Walks in the United States each year.  Last year over 2.5 million CROP Walkers, volunteers, and sponsors raised more than $17 million to help stop hunger around the world – and in their own communities.  Connect to their website for more information – wwwchurchworldservice.org.

CROP Walks are interfaith, noncompetitive, inter-generational events.  Seventy-five percent of the money raised is channeled through Church World Service/CROP and used in more than 70 countries.  These funds are used to assist in the aftermath of floods, earthquakes, famine, war-torn areas, immediate aid to the tsunami survivors in S.E. Asia.  In areas of third world countries, CROP funds provide tools, education, and a new start for struggling communities.  The remaining 25% stays in the local Walk cities to benefit selected local non-profit agencies.

Last March, almost 500 members of our own community and their sponsors participated in our local CROP Walk.  Locally, in the Conejo, we raised over $49,000!  Our 6-mile (10K) or 4.5 mile walk begins at CLU, traverses the community, and returns to CLU.  The following local non-profit agencies receive a portion of our funds: Conejo Meals on Wheels, Westlake Meals on Wheels, MANNA, Lutheran Social Services, and Catholic Charities.  Our lofty goal for this year is 600 walkers and $55,000.00!  You can make it happen.

Our 30th Anniversary CROP Walk is planned for Sunday, March 9, 2008.  Individual people, families, youth organizations, and churches will once again be on the march in March to raise money for, and awareness of people in desperate need of our help.  We would be delighted to have a contingent from your group join us this year!  Registration at Sports Complex, CLU, begins at 12:00 and the Walk begins at 1:00.  Make the decision, mark your calendar, pick up an envelope from your “deputy”, and ask for sponsors.  All monies in envelope should be brought to registration.

Please contact me for details.  Thank you,

 Sherrill Hyink – Coordinator – 805-492-3674

Article by co-sponsor Ms. McDaniel

Adelante Mujeres and its sponsors would like to extend a very heartfelt "GRACIAS!" for your encouragement and support of our Cinco de Mayo celebration.

The girls worked very hard preparing for the event.  Several committees were formed including invitations, publicity, hostess, children/games, decorations, and cleanup.  The committees met several times ensuring best planning.  Invitations were designed and sent out to approximately 80 homes. The entire group worked well transforming the multipurpose room/auditorium into a festive environment with banners, streamers, balloons, table cloths, center pieces, and music.  A list of the students involved is below.  If you have any of these students please commend them on a job well done.
There were approximately 150 people attending the event.  Port Hueneme High School Mariachi Band and Folklorico Dancers performed several songs and dances from three different regions.  Food was catered through Command Performance.  We ate chicken fajitas, beans, rice, chips and salsa.  Several parents brought in "specialty" dishes.  Many sweets were brought in by parents, students, and faculty. The evening concluded with pinatas for three different age groups of children.  The evening event received coverage from the Ventura County Star.  Previously, at our regularly scheduled Tuesday meeting, interviews and photographs of the group were taken by The Acorn.

Everyone had a great time.  If you didn't make it this year, we hope to see you next year.
