Guidelines for Determining the Level of an Accelerated Reader Book
On the AR lists on this website, how should a student or parent determine the appropriatness of a book? Certainly, a student may check with his/her teacher. Or, one may wish to use the "five-finger method" prior to the student's making the final selection (it's not scientific; it's just another indicator of suitability):
1) Parent, please open the book to any page;
2) Find a word whose meaning you think your student may not know;
3) If indeed the student doesn't know the definition, that's a count of "one finger."
4) Proceed with the first three steps with other words, and if there is a total of "five fingers'" worth of words from that one page, the book may be too difficult at this point in time.
5) If there are two or three words, the chance is greater that the book is at an appropriate level for the student.
